GEO vs SEO: What Changes When AI Answers the Question

SEO (search engine optimization) helps your pages rank in Google's list of results. GEO (generative engine optimization) helps your business get named and cited inside AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews. They share most of the same foundation, but GEO puts more weight on clear answers, structured information, and what other sites say about you.

You'll also hear GEO called AEO (answer engine optimization) or AI SEO. They mean roughly the same thing.

Why GEO Matters Now

Buyers increasingly ask AI tools who to hire instead of scrolling through search results. Those tools usually recommend just a few businesses. If you're not one of them, you may never get considered.

We've seen this firsthand. A homeowner asked ChatGPT for the best court resurfacing company, and it named our client Total Court Construction. That customer never compared websites on Google.

GEO vs SEO: The Key Differences

The goal

SEO aims for a high position in a list of links. GEO aims to be mentioned, quoted, or cited in a single written answer.

How success is measured

SEO is measured in rankings, clicks, and organic traffic. GEO is measured in how often AI tools mention your brand, which of your pages they cite, and how they describe you. AI answers often don't send a click, so mentions matter on their own.

What the tools look for

Google ranks pages using relevance, quality, links, and user experience. AI tools pull information from many sources, then summarize. They favor content that answers a question directly and specifically, facts that are consistent across sources, and businesses that trusted sites mention.

Where the signals come from

SEO is heavily about your own site and the links pointing to it. GEO also depends on what other places say: reviews, directories, industry lists, Reddit threads, podcasts, and news coverage.

What SEO and GEO Have in Common

Most good SEO work also helps GEO. Both need:

  • A fast, crawlable website that search engines and AI tools can read

  • Clear pages for each service, product, and location you offer

  • Helpful content written for real questions

  • Structured data that labels your business, services, reviews, and FAQs

  • Strong reviews and consistent business details across the web

If your site isn't indexed or ranking on Google at all, start there. AI tools often pull from top search results.

How to Optimize for GEO

1. Answer questions in the first two sentences

Put a direct, quotable answer at the top of each page and section, then add detail. AI tools tend to lift short, clear statements.

2. Be specific about what you do and where

"We help businesses grow" gives an AI tool nothing to work with. "We design and build Shopify stores for supplement brands in Texas" does.

3. Add FAQ sections and structured data

FAQ content written in plain language maps neatly to the questions people ask AI tools. Mark it up with FAQ schema, and add Organization, Service, and LocalBusiness schema so your details are machine-readable.

4. Get mentioned on sites AI tools trust

Directory profiles, "best of" lists, industry associations, partner pages, podcasts, and press coverage all help. Consistent details across these sources make AI tools more confident recommending you.

5. Collect reviews

Reviews on Google and industry sites are a strong signal of trust for both search and AI tools, and they often get quoted in AI answers.

6. Keep information current

Outdated pricing, services, or locations lead to wrong answers about your business. Update key pages regularly and show when they were last updated.

7. Track your AI visibility

Each month, ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google the questions your customers ask, like "best [service] in [city]." Record whether you're named, who else appears, and which sources get cited. Then go earn mentions on those sources.

Does GEO Replace SEO?

No. Google still drives a large share of website traffic, and AI tools often rely on the same pages that rank well. The smart move is to do both: build a strong SEO foundation, then layer on the content, structure, and mentions that make AI tools confident naming you.

Can Anyone Guarantee AI Recommendations?

No. AI answers change by question, user, and model update, and no one controls them. What you can do is make your business the clearest, best-supported option for the questions your customers ask.
